But the collectivity of its mainprojects made the FWP very different to grants programs today, most of whichencourage writers to pursue their own interests in isolation from (and,implicitly, in competition with) others.

Alsberg, the project’snational director, went further, explaining that the project would accept ‘nearwriters’, ‘occasional writers’ and even ‘young college men and women who wantto write, probably can write, but lack the opportunity.’Crucially, writers themselvesfought, through explicitly political groups like the Writers Union and theUnemployed Writers Association, for the program from which they benefited.
