Founded in 1967, the Heard consists of a 289 acre wildlife sanctuary and a natural science museum for the primary purpose of educating children about nature.
When I first visited the Heard Museum back in 2013, it made such an impression that I knew I had to bring my mom here, too.

We were fortunate to have a docent who obviously has a love for the Native culture and was thorough in explaing the different periods and peoples who lived and settled throughout the southwest.I'll start by saying I am not a huge fan of museums as a whole. Mom loved it! This is quite an extensive place and had some beautiful exhibits and sculptures.

The Heard exists to bring nature and people together to discover, enjoy, experience, restore, and preserve our priceless environment.
I cannot recommend the Heard Museum enough.

The Heard Museum is located just north of downtown Phoenix and is open 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sundays. The trails are not paved and are only accessible to running strollers (not umbrella strollers). The Heard Museum has a wonderful gift shop and bookstore, as well as a gourmet café (no hot dogs and chips!).

Most all of the animals that live in captivity at the Heard Museum are abandoned pets or those that were illegally taken from the wild by people who quickly discovered that no wild animal makes a good pet.
It is not a very large collection, so make sure to take the tours, which will fill you in on everything related to the Heard Museum.
