Getting to Gisela Ruins. no ratings. Close to a cute, friendly country store and not far from Payson.Yards from public land.

It was right next to a bunch of houses that were a bit on the shady side.I didn't trust leaving my vehicle there to camp where it was decent. This may not have been an issue in a car/truck or on an adventure style motorcycle, which we were not riding. We were just a little family of three with one tent; a larger party would have to be more adventurous going off road to find a larger clearing. Couldn't beat it for the price though!

Other than littering up the place they're a good group of kids. Tonto Creek reaches water flows in excess of fifty thousand cubic feet per second.

This trip report actually begins at the confluence of Tonto Creek and Haigler Creek and follows Tonto Creek 17 miles* to Gisela with an elevation loss of 1000 ft. For instructions to the confluence please see the Hellsgate trip description. A few miles before the town of Rye, there is a turnoff called Gisela Road. We had to park about .25 miles away, which wasn't a big deal. In addition to the rooms on the very top of the butte, we also came accross a wall on the northern slope, about half way up (GPS: N 34 04.704' W 111 16.942').Another point of interest is a box canyon northeast of the ruins (down the hill). 347 Mimosa, Tonto Basin, AZ 85553. The thing we found most interesting about these ruins was the large room on the southern end of them--perhaps it was used for ceremonies, meetings, or other large gatherings.
We didn't stay. The time on the creek was mostly spent rock hopping or swimming, with some swims being a couple hundred yards in length at least.

Here the rocks are sedimentary, the surroundings densely wooded and the canyon quite shallow but the character soon changes as the creek flows south into a particularly rugged area known as the Hellsgate Wilderness.The rocks become jagged and metamorphic with a great variety of colors and forms, and enclose a canyon that is over 1,000 feet deep in places and contains many beautiful pools, cascades and flooded narrow channels.

There is no trail to get to these ruins, but the bush-whacking isn't very hard. You'll want to follow Tonto Creek downstream for about 1 1/2 miles.
